Chapter: Hides of dead animals are purified by tanning

Authentic hadith of Sahih Muslim Sahih Muslim 363a

وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَعَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ وَابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ جَمِيعًا عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، قَالَ يَحْيَى أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ تُصُدِّقَ عَلَى مَوْلاَةٍ لِمَيْمُونَةَ بِشَاةٍ فَمَاتَتْ فَمَرَّ بِهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ ‏"‏

هَلاَّ أَخَذْتُمْ إِهَابَهَا فَدَبَغْتُمُوهُ فَانْتَفَعْتُمْ بِهِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَقَالُوا إِنَّهَا مَيْتَةٌ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ إِنَّمَا حَرُمَ أَكْلُهَا ‏"

The freed slave-girl of Maimuna was given a goat in charity but it died. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) happened to pass by that (carcass). Upon this be said:

Why did you not take off its skin? You could put it to use, after tanning it. They (the Companions) said: It was dead. Upon, this he (the Messenger of Allah) said: Only its eating is prohibited. Abu bakr and Ibn Umar in their narrations said: It is narrated from Maimuna (may Allah be pleased with her).

قَوْله : ( قَالَ أَبُو بَكْر وَابْن أَبِي عُمَر فِي حَدِيثهمَا عَنْ مَيْمُونَة ) يَعْنِي أَنَّهُمَا ذَكَرَا فِي رِوَايَتهمَا أَنَّ اِبْن عَبَّاس , رَوَاهُ عَنْ مَيْمُونَة. قَوْله صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ( إِنَّمَا حَرُمَ أَكْلهَا ) رُوِّينَاهُ عَلَى وَجْهَيْنِ ( حَرُمَ ) بِفَتْحِ الْحَاء وَضَمِّ الرَّاء وَ ( حُرِّمَ ) بِضَمِّ الْحَاء وَكَسْر الرَّاء الْمُشَدَّدَة فِي هَذَا اللَّفْظ دَلَالَة عَلَى تَحْرِيم أَكْل جِلْد الْمَيْتَة , وَهُوَ الصَّحِيح كَمَا قَدَّمْته , وَلِلْقَائِلِ الْآخَر أَنْ يَقُول : الْمُرَاد تَحْرِيم لَحْمهَا. وَاَللَّه أَعْلَم.…

Once Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) passed by a dead sheep and said to the people, "Wouldn't you benefit by its skin?" The people replied that it was dead. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "But its eating only is illegal."
