Mishkat al-Masabih 1650

I heard from Mas'ud b. al-Hakam who narrated it on the authority of Hadrat 'Ali that he said: We saw the Prophet (ﷺ) stood up for a (bier) and we also stood up; he sat down and we too sat down.

قَامَ فَقُمْنَا وَقَعَدَ فَقَعَدْنَا ‏.‏ يَعْنِي فِي الْجَنَازَةِ ‏.‏

Narrated by Ali

This hadith has been narrated by Shu'ba with the same chain of transmitters.

وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ، وَعُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، - وَهُوَ الْقَطَّانُ - عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ ‏.‏

"Stand up when you see a funeral procession, and he who accompanies it should not sit down until the coffin is placed on the ground." Agreed upon.

وَعَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ ‏- رضى الله عنه ‏- أَنَّ رَسُولَ اَللَّهِ ‏- صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏-قَالَ: { إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْجَنَازَةَ فَقُومُوا, فَمَنْ تَبِعَهَا فَلَا يَجْلِسْ حَتَّى تُوضَعَ } مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْه ِ 1‏ .‏ ‏1 ‏-…

The Prophet (ﷺ) as saying: When you see a funeral, stand up for it till it leaves you behind or it is placed (on the ground).

إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْجَنَازَةَ فَقُومُوا لَهَا حَتَّى تُخَلِّفَكُمْ أَوْ تُوضَعَ ‏"

"When any one of you sees a funeral and is not walking with it, let him stand up until it has passed him, or until (the body) is placed (in the grave) before if passes him."

"‏ إِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمُ الْجَنَازَةَ فَلَمْ يَكُنْ مَاشِيًا مَعَهَا فَلْيَقُمْ حَتَّى تُخَلِّفَهُ أَوْ تُوضَعَ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ تُخَلِّفَهُ ‏"

Ibn Juraij told me that Abu Zubair heard Jabir say that the Prophet (ﷺ) kept standing for a bier until it disappeared.

Jabir said that when a funeral passed by God’s messenger stood up [to show respect] and they stood up along with him. They told him it was a Jewish funeral and he replied, “Death is a fearful event, so when you see a funeral stand up.” (Bukhari and Muslim.)
