حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، حَدَّثَنَا سُهَيْلُ بْنُ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏

إِذَا تَبِعْتُمُ الْجَنَازَةَ فَلاَ تَجْلِسُوا حَتَّى تُوضَعَ ‏"

Narrated Abu Sa’id Al Khudri :

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying: When you follow a funeral, do not sit until the bier is placed (on the ground).

Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by al-Thawri (i.e. Sufyan) from Suhail, from his father on the authority of Abu Hurairah. This version has: until it (the bier) is placed on the ground. It has also been narrated by Abu Mu'wiyah from Suhail. This has: Until it is placed in the grave.

Abu Dawud said: Sufyan's version is more guarded than that of Abu Mu'awiyah.

Al-Azimabadi — Awn al-Ma'bud

( حَتَّى تُوضَع ) : أَيْ بِالْأَرْضِ فِيهِ النَّهْي عَنْ جُلُوس الْمَاشِي مَعَ الْجِنَازَة قَبْل أَنْ تُوضَع عَلَى الْأَرْض , فَقَالَ الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ وَإِسْحَاق وَأَحْمَد وَمُحَمَّد بْن الْحَسَن إِنَّهُ مُسْتَحَبّ , حَكَى ذَلِكَ عَنْهُمْ النَّوَوِيّ وَالْحَافِظ فِي الْفَتْح وَنَقَلَهُ اِبْن الْمُنْذِر عَنْ أَكْثَر الصَّحَابَة وَالتَّابِعِينَ , قَالُوا وَالنَّسْخ إِنَّمَا هُوَ فِي قِيَام مَنْ مَرَّتْ بِهِ لَا فِي قِيَام مَنْ شَيَّعَهَا. وَحَكَى فِي الْفَتْح عَنْ الشَّعْبِيّ وَالنَّخَعِيِّ أَنَّهُ يُكْرَه الْقُعُود قَبْل أَنْ تُوضَع. وَأَخْرَجَ النَّسَائِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيد وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَة أَنَّهُمَا قَالَا : " مَا رَأَيْنَا رَسُول اللَّه صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَهِدَ جَنَازَة قَ…

"When any one of you sees a funeral and is not walking with it, let him stand up until it has passed him, or until (the body) is placed (in the grave) before if passes him."

"‏ إِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمُ الْجَنَازَةَ فَلَمْ يَكُنْ مَاشِيًا مَعَهَا فَلْيَقُمْ حَتَّى تُخَلِّفَهُ أَوْ تُوضَعَ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ تُخَلِّفَهُ ‏"

Authentic Mishkat al-Masabih 1649

Jabir said that when a funeral passed by God’s messenger stood up [to show respect] and they stood up along with him. They told him it was a Jewish funeral and he replied, “Death is a fearful event, so when you see a funeral stand up.” (Bukhari and Muslim.)
