Chapter: Prohibition of standing up until the food has been cleared away, and that one take his hand away until the people have finished eating

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَلَفٍ الْعَسْقَلاَنِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ، أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ الأَعْلَى، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏

"‏ إِذَا وُضِعَتِ الْمَائِدَةُ فَلاَ يَقُومُ رَجُلٌ حَتَّى تُرْفَعَ الْمَائِدَةُ وَلاَ يَرْفَعُ يَدَهُ وَإِنْ شَبِعَ حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ الْقَوْمُ وَلْيُعْذِرْ فَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ يُخْجِلُ جَلِيسَهُ فَيَقْبِضُ يَدَهُ وَعَسَى أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ فِي الطَّعَامِ حَاجَةٌ ‏"

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“When a meal is served, a man should not stand up until it is removed, and he should not take his hand away, even if he is full, until the people have finished. And let him continue eating.* For a man may make his companion shy, causing him to withhold his hand, and perhaps he has a need for the food.”

Al-Sindi — Hashiyat al-Sindi on Sunan Ibn Majah

قَوْله ( وَلْيُعْذِرْ ) مِنْ التَّعْذِير بِمَعْنَى التَّقْصِير أَيْ لِيُقْلِلْ فِي الْأَكْل إِنْ شَبِعَ وَلَا يَرْفَع يَده مِنْ الْإِعْذَار بِمَعْنَى الْمُبَالَغَة كَمَا جَاءَ إِذَا أَكَلَ مَعَ قَوْم كَانَ آخِرهمْ لِئَلَّا يَخْجَل جَلِيسه بِقِيَامِهِ وَرَفْع يَده وَفِي الزَّوَائِد فِي إِسْنَاده عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى بْنُ أَعْيَنَ وَهُوَ ضَعِيف كَمَا تَقَدَّمَ قَرِيبًا.…

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: When one of you eats, he must not eat from the top of the dish, but should eat from the bottom; for the blessing descends from the top of it.

إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ طَعَامًا فَلاَ يَأْكُلْ مِنْ أَعْلَى الصَّحْفَةِ وَلَكِنْ لِيَأْكُلْ مِنْ أَسْفَلِهَا فَإِنَّ الْبَرَكَةَ تَنْزِلُ مِنْ أَعْلاَهَا ‏"
