حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى الصَّنْعَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ الأَصَمِّ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَقَالَ أَحُجُّ عَنْ أَبِي قَالَ ‏"‏ نَعَمْ

حُجَّ عَنْ أَبِيكَ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَزِدْهُ خَيْرًا لَمْ تَزِدْهُ شَرًّا ‏"

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said:

“A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘Shall I perform Hajj on behalf of my father?’ He said: ‘Yes, perform Hajj on behalf of your father, for if you cannot add any good to his record (at least) you will not add anything bad.’”

Reported by Ibn Majah (No. 2904) and Ahmad (No. 2080).

قَوْله ( فَإِنْ لَمْ تَزِدْهُ خَيْرًا ) كَأَنَّهُ أَشَارَ بِذَلِكَ إِلَى أَنَّ الشَّيْء إِذَا كَانَ مُحْتَمِلًا بَيْن أَنْ يَكُون خَيْرًا وَبَيْن أَنْ يَكُون شَرًّا فَاللَّائِق بِحَالِ الْعَاقِل أَنْ يَفْعَلهُ وَلَا يَتَوَقَّف فِي فِعْل عَلَى السُّؤَال وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَم بِحَقِيقَةِ الْحَال وَفِي الزَّوَائِد إِسْنَاده صَحِيح وَسُلَيْمَانُ هُوَ اِبْنُ فَيْرُوزَ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ ثِقَة.…

Sa'd b. 'Ubadah asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): My Mother has died and she could not fulfill her vow which she had taken. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Fulfill it on her behalf.
