Narrator:Umar ibn al-Khattāb

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مُوسَى الْخَطْمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ عُمَرَ،

أَنَّهُ كَانَ عَلَيْهِ نَذْرُ لَيْلَةٍ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يَعْتَكِفُهَا فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ ‏.‏

It was narrated from ‘Umar that he had vowed during the days of Ignorance to spend one night in I’tikaf. He asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about it, so he commanded him to spend it in I’tikaf.

Al-Sindi — Hashiyat al-Sindi on Sunan Ibn Majah

قَوْله ( نَذْر لَيْلَة ) مَنْ يَرَى أَنَّهُ لَا بُدّ مِنْ صَوْم يَقُول الْمُرَاد اللَّيْلَة مَعَ يَوْمهَا وَقَدْ جَاءَ مَا يُسَاعِدهُ ( فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَعْتَكِف ) لَا مَانِع مِنْ الْقَوْل بِأَنَّ نَذْر الْكَافِر يَنْعَقِد مَوْقُوفًا عَلَى إِسْلَامه فَإِنْ أَسْلَمَ لَزِمَهُ الْوَفَاء بِهِ فِي الْخَيْر وَالْكُفْر وَإِنْ كَانَ يُمْنَع مِنْ اِنْعِقَاده مُنَجَّزًا لَكِنْ لَا نُسَلِّم أَنْ يُمْنَع عَنْهُ مَوْقُوفًا وَحَدِيث الْإِسْلَام يَجُبّ مَا قَبْله مِنْ الْخَطَايَا لَا يُنَافِيه لِأَنَّهُ فِي الْخَطَايَا لَا فِي النُّذُور وَلَيْسَ النَّذْر مِنْهَا وَاَللَّه أَعْلَم.…

Ibn ‘Umar said that when ‘Umar consulted the Prophet about a vow he had made in the pre-Islamic period to spend a night in devotion in the sacred mosque, he said, “Fulfill your vow.” (Bukhari and Muslim.)

When we returned from (the battle of) Hunain, `Umar asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about a vow which he had made during the Pre-lslamic period of Ignorance that he would perform I`tikaf. The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered him to fulfill his vow.
