Narrator:Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏

خَمِّرُوا الآنِيَةَ وَأَجِيفُوا الأَبْوَابَ، وَأَطْفِئُوا الْمَصَابِيحَ، فَإِنَّ الْفُوَيْسِقَةَ رُبَّمَا جَرَّتِ الْفَتِيلَةَ فَأَحْرَقَتْ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ ‏"

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "(At bedtime) cover the utensils, close the doors, and put out the lights, lest the evil creature (the rat) should pull away the wick and thus burn the people of the house."

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani — Fath al-Bari

وَأَمَّا حَدِيث جَابِر فَقَوْله فِي السَّنَد " كَثِير " كَذَا لِلْأَكْثَرِ غَيْر مَنْسُوب , زَادَ أَبُو ذَرّ فِي رِوَايَته " هُوَ اِبْن شِنْظِير " وَهُوَ كَذَلِكَ , وَشِنْظِير بِكَسْرِ الشِّين وَالظَّاء الْمُعْجَمَتَيْنِ بَيْنهمَا نُون سَاكِنَة تَقَدَّمَ ضَبْطه وَالْكَلَام عَلَيْهِ فِي " بَاب ذِكْر الْجِنّ " مِنْ كِتَاب بَدْء الْخَلْق وَشَرْح حَدِيثه هَذَا وَأَنَّهُ لَيْسَ لَهُ فِي الصَّحِيح غَيْر هَذَا الْحَدِيث , وَوَقَعَ فِي رِجَال الصَّحِيح لِلْكَلَابَاذِيّ أَنَّ الْبُخَارِيّ أَخْرَجَ لَهُ أَيْضًا فِي " بَاب اِسْتِعَانَة الْيَد فِي الصَّلَاة " فَرَاجَعْت الْبَاب الْمَذْكُور مِنْ الصَّحِيح وَهُوَ قُبَيْل كِتَاب الْجَنَائِز فَمَا وَجَدْت لَهُ هُنَاكَ ذِكْرًا. ثُمَّ وَجَدْت لَهُ بَعْد الْبَ…

that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Cover the vessels, tie the water-skins, close the doors, extinguish the torches, for indeed the mischief-makers (vermin) may drag away the wick, causing a fire for the inhabitants of the house."

"‏ خَمِّرُوا الآنِيَةَ وَأَوْكُوا الأَسْقِيَةَ وَأَجِيفُوا الأَبْوَابَ وَأَطْفِئُوا الْمَصَابِيحَ فَإِنَّ الْفُوَيْسِقَةَ رُبَّمَا جَرَّتِ الْفَتِيلَةَ فَأَحْرَقَتْ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ ‏"

Allah s Apostle said, "When you intend going to bed at night, put out the lights, close the doors, tie the mouths of the water skins, and cover your food and drinks." Hamrnam said, "I think he (the other narrator) added, 'even with piece of wood across the utensil.'

أَطْفِئُوا الْمَصَابِيحَ بِاللَّيْلِ إِذَا رَقَدْتُمْ، وَغَلِّقُوا الأَبْوَابَ، وَأَوْكُوا الأَسْقِيَةَ، وَخَمِّرُوا الطَّعَامَ وَالشَّرَابَ ‏"

Authentic Sunan Abu Dawud 3732

Jabir b.’Abd Allah reported the Prophet (ﷺ)as saying this version is not complete ‘’for the devil does not open a shut door, or loosen a water-skin, or uncover a vessel, for a mouse sets a house on fire over its inhabitants’’.
