حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ، عَنْ خَالِدٍ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ، قَالَ

أَيُّكُمْ يَعْلَمُ مَا وَرَّثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم الْجَدَّ فَقَالَ مَعْقِلُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ أَنَا وَرَّثَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم السُّدُسَ ‏.‏ قَالَ مَعَ مَنْ قَالَ لاَ أَدْرِي ‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ دَرَيْتَ فَمَا تُغْنِي إِذًا ‏.‏

Al-Hasan reported that Umar asked:

Which of your knows what share the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had given to the grandfather from the estate? Ma'qil ibn Yasar said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) gave him a sixth. He asked: Along with whom? He replied: I do not know. He said: You do not know; what is the use then?

Al-Azimabadi — Awn al-Ma'bud

( عَنْ الْحَسَن ) : هُوَ الْبَصْرِيّ ( قَالَ مَعْقِل بْن يَسَار أَنَا ) : أَيْ أَنَا أَعْلَم ( وَرَّثَهُ ) : أَيْ الْجَدّ. قَالَ الْمُنْذِرِيُّ : وَأَخْرَجَهُ النَّسَائِيُّ وَأَخْرَجَهُ اِبْن مَاجَهْ بِنَحْوِهِ وَحَدِيث الْحَسَن عَنْ عُمَر بْن الْخَطَّاب مُنْقَطِع فَإِنَّهُ وُلِدَ فِي سَنَة إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ وَقُتِلَ عُمَر رَضِيَ اللَّه عَنْهُ فِي سَنَة ثَلَاث وَعِشْرِينَ وَمَاتَ فِيهَا. وَقِيلَ مَاتَ سَنَة أَرْبَع وَعِشْرِينَ وَذَكَرَ أَبُو حَاتِم الرَّازِيّ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَصِحّ لِلْحَسَنِ سَمَاع عَنْ مَعْقِل بْن يَسَار رَضِيَ اللَّه عَنْهُمَا. وَقَدْ أَخْرَجَ الْبُخَارِيّ وَمُسْلِم فِي صَحِيحهمَا حَدِيث الْحَسَن عَنْ مَعْقِل بْن يَسَار.…

The Prophet (ﷺ) appointed a sixth to a grandmother if no mother is left to inherit before her. [Reported by Abu Dawud and an-Nasa'i. Ibn Khuzaimah and Ibn al-Jarud graded it Sahih (authentic) and Ibn 'Adi graded it strong].

Ibn Mas'ud said about a case where there was a grandmother and her son that she was the first grandmother to whom God’s Messenger gave a sixth which was not due to her when she had a son who was still alive. Tirmidhi and Darimi transmitted it, but Tirmidhi declared it to be a weak tradition.
