حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ الْبَزَّازُ، حَدَّثَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُوسَى السِّيْنَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ، قَالَ شَهِدْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم الْعِيدَ فَلَمَّا قَضَى الصَّلاَةَ قَالَ ‏"‏

إِنَّا نَخْطُبُ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَجْلِسَ لِلْخُطْبَةِ فَلْيَجْلِسْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ فَلْيَذْهَبْ ‏"

Narrated Abdullah ibn as-Sa'ib:

I attended the 'Id prayer along with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). When he finished the prayer, he said: We shall deliver the sermon; he who likes to sit for listening to it may sit and he who likes to go away may go away.

Abu Dawud said: this is a mursal tradition (i.e. the successor 'Ata directly reporting from the Prophet (ﷺ) and omitting the link of the Companions).

Reported by Abu Dawud (No. 1155) and Ibn Majah (No. 1290).

Al-Azimabadi — Awn al-Ma'bud

( الْبَزَّاز ) : بِمُعْجَمَتَيْنِ ( فَلَمَّا قَضَى الصَّلَاة ) إِلَخْ : وَفِيهِ أَنَّ الْجُلُوس لِسَمَاعِ خُطْبَة الْعِيد غَيْر وَاجِب. قَالَ فِي الْمُنْتَقَى : وَفِيهِ بَيَان أَنَّ الْخُطْبَة سُنَّة , إِذْ لَوْ وَجَبَتْ وَجَبَ الْجُلُوس لَهَا. اِنْتَهَى. قَالَ الشَّوْكَانِيُّ : وَفِيهِ أَنَّ تَخْيِير السَّامِع لَا يَدُلّ عَلَى عَدَم وُجُوب الْخُطْبَة بَلْ عَلَى عَدَم وُجُوب سَمَاعهَا إِلَّا أَنْ يُقَال إِنَّهُ يَدُلّ مِنْ بَاب الْإِشَارَة ; لِأنَّهُ إِذَا لَمْ يَجِب سَمَاعهَا لَا يَجِب فِعْلهَا , وَذَلِكَ لِأَنَّ الْخُطْبَة خِطَاب وَلَا خِطَاب إِلَّا لِمُخَاطَبٍ , فَإِذَا لَمْ يَجِب السَّمَاع عَلَى الْمُخَاطَب لَمْ يَجِب الْخِطَاب. وَقَدْ اِتَّفَقَ الْمُوجِبُونَ لِصَلَاةِ الْعِيد وَغَيْرهمْ…

“I attended the ‘Eid prayer with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He led us in offering the ‘Eid prayer, then he said: ‘I have finished the prayer. Whoever wants to sit (and listen to) the sermon, then let him sit, and whoever wants to leave, then let him leave.’”

"‏ قَدْ قَضَيْنَا الصَّلاَةَ. فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَجْلِسَ لِلْخُطْبَةِ فَلْيَجْلِسْ. وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ فَلْيَذْهَبْ ‏"

Differing grades Sunan Abu Dawud 1073

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Two festivals ('Id and Friday) have synchronised on this day. If anyone does not want to offer the Friday prayer, the 'Id prayer is sufficient for him. But we shall offer the Friday prayer. This tradition has been narrated by 'Umar from Shu'bah.

قَدِ اجْتَمَعَ فِي يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا عِيدَانِ فَمَنْ شَاءَ أَجْزَأَهُ مِنَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَإِنَّا مُجَمِّعُونَ ‏"

“Two ‘Eid came together at the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), so he led the people in prayer, then he said: ‘Whoever wishes to come to Friday (prayer), let him come, and whoever wishes to stay behind, let him stay behind.’”

"‏ مَنْ شَاءَ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ الْجُمُعَةَ فَلْيَأْتِهَا وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَنْ يَتَخَلَّفَ فَلْيَتَخَلَّفْ ‏"
