Biography of Ahmed Amer
Ahmed Amer: the life of a reciter whose heart was filled with the remembrance of Allah
He was the head of the syndicate of Holy Quran reciters in Sharqia Governorate and one of the most famous reciters in the Islamic world. He was called “Sheikh” from an early age, and success followed him wherever he went. He traveled across the world and proved to be the finest ambassador of the Holy Quran through his voice, his knowledge and his conduct. This is Sheikh Ahmed Amer, whose full name was Ahmed Mohamed Amer, born on May 3, 1927, in Egypt.
As a child, the reciter Sheikh Ahmed Amer grew up in Kafr al-Asakira, in the district of Al-Salihiyya in Sharqia Governorate, Egypt. He was raised in a conservative family that cherished Islamic values and respected scholars, as his father, may Allah have mercy on him, was himself a sheikh devoted to the Holy Quran.
As soon as he was old enough, his father enrolled him in a kuttab (Quran school) in the village of Al-Akhyuwa, where he learned the Holy Quran and completed its memorization before the age of eleven. He then studied the science of the readings (qira’at) under Sheikh Abdel Salam Al-Sharbasi in Dakahlia Governorate, where he excelled, before mastering the tajweed of the Holy Quran in the seven readings at only thirteen. This is what led the people of his village to call him “the Sheikh.”
Following his early success, the reputation of the reciter Sheikh Ahmed Amer spread throughout Sharqia Governorate and the surrounding regions. He became the talk of the people there, who admired and esteemed his brilliance and talent. Continuing on the path of success, in 1963 he applied for the recitation test at Egyptian Radio and passed with distinction. Soon afterward, however, he left for Sudan and other Arab and foreign countries in Africa, Asia and Europe, as invitations poured in from Muslim communities there to recite the Holy Quran with his moving voice and “golden throat.”
As the crowning achievement of his successful scholarly path and fruitful career, Sheikh Ahmed Amer received a number of certificates, awards and decorations in various Arab and foreign countries. The most notable of these honors were the medal of the King of Malaysia, awarded to him in 1972, and a special invitation to chair the jury of the international Holy Quran competition held every year in Malaysia.
After a career filled with successes and achievements, he passed away, may Allah have mercy on him, on 11 Jumada al-Ula 1437 AH, corresponding to February 20, 2016, at the age of nearly 89. His body was borne in a solemn funeral procession in his native Sharqia Governorate, Egypt.
