زكاة العقار
Zakat and property
Your home is not liable; a rented property is liable through its rent; property for resale through its value.
Calculate my zakat The calculator applies these rules with today’s prices, according to the school you choose.
Your home and personal-use property
No zakat on the house you live in, a second home or the premises where you work: they are personal-use property (agreement of the scholars).

Rented property
No zakat on the value of a rented property, but on the rent: what is left of it on your yearly date is added to your money and zakated at 2.5% (International Islamic Fiqh Academy, resolution 2 of 1985; Kuwait Zakat House; Diyanet; Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta; Ibn Baz). The view of a 10% zakat on net income, like crops, attributed to twentieth-century scholars, is not held by any of the institutions consulted.

Land or a flat for resale
Property bought to be resold is trade goods: zakat every year on its market value (Diyanet; Ibn Baz; Kuwait Zakat House). In the Maliki school, whoever holds it waiting for prices to rise pays once, on sale (Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta also accepts this). If you are undecided between keeping and selling it, it is not liable (Kuwait Zakat House; Ibn Baz).
