The obligation
“And give its due on the day of its harvest” (Quran 6:141). Zakat on crops is due when the grain and fruit ripen, with no condition of a year; it is given after the harvest and threshing.

Which produce is liable
Wheat, barley, dates and raisins are liable by agreement. For the rest, the schools differ:
| School | Liable produce | Nisab |
|---|---|---|
| Hanafi | Everything the land produces and that is cultivated, fruit and vegetables included (Abu Hanifa) | None according to Abu Hanifa; 5 wasq according to Abu Yusuf and Muhammad |
| Maliki | Staple foods that keep (cereals, pulses), dates, raisins, olives | 5 wasq |
| Shafi‘i | Staple foods that keep; not olives (later view) | 5 wasq |
| Hanbali | Everything that is measured and keeps: cereals, pulses, dates, raisins, almonds, pistachios… | 5 wasq |

Nisab and rates
The nisab is 5 wasq (300 sa‘), about 612 kg of wheat (Kuwait Zakat House); the weight varies with the produce, since the measure is a volume. Varieties of the same kind are added together, different kinds are not.
- 10% (a tenth) for what is watered by rain, rivers and springs;
- 5% (half a tenth) for what is watered at a cost (pump, network, animals);
- 7.5% when watering is half natural and half at a cost (agreement reported by Ibn Qudama); when one method prevails, its rate applies according to the Hanafi and Hanbali schools.
Farming costs are not deducted: the reduced 5% rate already allows for them (agreement of the four schools). Debts do not reduce this zakat.

Rented land and sharecropping
On rented land, the tenant pays the zakat on the harvest (Maliki, Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools; Abu Yusuf and Muhammad). In sharecropping, each party pays on their share, if it reaches the nisab according to Ibn ‘Uthaymin.
