Biography of Yahya Ahmad Al-Holili
Yahya Al-Holili: The Fine Record of a Dedicated Reciter
He is one of the best-known Quran reciters in Yemen in particular and in the Islamic world in general. Many people have grown attached to his sweet voice, and for Yemenis his name is linked to the recitation of verses of the Wise Reminder before iftar and suhoor during the month of Ramadan every year. The village of Al-Holailah, in Sanaa Governorate, is his birthplace, and from it he takes his family name and the name by which he is known. This is the reciter Sheikh Yahya Al-Holili, whose full name is Yahya Ahmad Mohammed Al-Holili; he was born in 1372 AH / 1952 CE.
At the age of seven, Yahya Al-Holili left his small village for the capital, Sanaa, where his father, may Allah have mercy on him, enrolled him in the Quran memorization circles of the Great Mosque. His father had taken care to have him memorize the Quran before he recited it from memory to the sheikhs of the Great Mosque. In just two years, he completed his memorization of the Holy Quran, after which he devoted himself to the study of the seven readings under a group of scholars and sheikhs, including the reciter Mohammed Hussein Amer, Sheikh Hassan Lutf Basuhaid, and others.
In his early twenties, after years of hard work and study, he obtained the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in Arabic language sciences from Yemen’s Ministry of Education, in 1393 AH / 1973 CE. A few years later, he took part in a number of local and international Quran competitions, most notably the one held in Malaysia in 1979 and the one hosted by Saudi Arabia the following year, in which he won second prize.
Alongside his intellectual and Quranic activities, Yahya Al-Holili held a number of posts and responsibilities, most notably teaching the Holy Quran in Sanaa in 1970, and later serving as imam and preacher (khatib) of the mosque of the Al-Tahrir district in the capital, Sanaa. He also served on the jury of a Quran competition in Egypt in 1995, chaired the jury of the President’s Award for Quran Memorization in Yemen in 2000, and was appointed to the jury of the Holy Quran competition in Turkey in 2013.
In addition to his scholarly and intellectual record, Sheikh Yahya Al-Holili has a substantial audio library containing the finest Quran recitations he has recorded in his sweet voice for radio and television over the years. These recordings are available on CD and online. On a personal level, Sheikh Yahya Al-Holili is married and the father of nine children.
