Biography of Mohammed Hussein Amer

Mohammed Hussein Amer, Master of the Seven Readings

A hafiz and reciter of the Holy Quran, he was at the same time one of the first innovative munshids in Yemen. His mellow voice and polished delivery made him famous in Yemen and beyond. He was known for his Ramadan appearances in the local media, when, during the blessed month, he would address Yemenis with Quranic recitations, glorifications of Allah, and supplications. This is Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Amer, the eminent scholar nicknamed “the Sheikh of the Seven Readings.”

Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Amer was born in 1938 in the village of al-Dhawahirah, in the Dhamar Governorate of Yemen, where he grew up. Fate decreed that he would lose his sight before his first birthday, at around six months of age. Despite this, thanks to the care he received from his family, especially from his father, Sheikh Hussein Amer, he managed to memorize the entire Holy Quran by the age of ten. He then turned to the Quranic sciences, studying the seven readings, the classical texts (mutun), and other subjects under a number of sheikhs and scholars, such as Sheikh Hassan Shandaf, Sheikh Abdullah al-Taifi, and Sheikh Hussein Mubarak al-Ghaythi.

Once he had matured and mastered the rules and sciences of the Quran, he devoted himself to teaching the Holy Quran and helped establish several Quran memorization schools in the capital, Sanaa. He trained a number of reciters, such as the reciter Yahya Al-Holili, as well as several scholars and munshids. Alongside his teaching, he worked as a reciter for Sanaa Radio and Television and for several Yemeni radio stations, which earned him wide renown at home and abroad.

Besides his fame for recitation and tarteel, Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Amer was known for religious nasheed singing: he was one of the leading founders of the Yemeni Munshids Association. In this field, he performed nasheeds on Yemeni radio and television and was much in demand at numerous gatherings and events. After a career rich in quality and generosity, he fell ill and soon returned his soul to his Creator, in the capital, Sanaa, on 15 Ramadan 1419 AH.
