Virtues and benefits of Surah Nuh
No hadith attributes a particular virtue to it: Surah Nuh draws its merit from belonging to the Mufassal, by which the Prophet ﷺ was favoured over the other prophets. From beginning to end it tells how Noah (Nuh) called his people through hope and warning, reminding them of Allah’s blessings and of their creation: a lesson in how to call to Allah.
Its virtues at a glance
-
A surah of the Mufassal
It belongs to the Mufassal, given to the Prophet ﷺ as an extra gift and by which he was favoured over the other prophets, according to the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa’: “… and I was favoured with the Mufassal.”
-
The method of calling to Allah through Noah
The surah relates what Noah said to his people and how they answered him, and the ways he followed in calling them: sometimes hope, sometimes warning, sometimes inviting them to reflect on Allah’s blessings or reminding them of their creation.
-
Noah’s supplication for the believers
It ends with Noah’s supplication, after he had stayed among his people a thousand years less fifty: “My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house as a believer, and the believing men and believing women.”
What the surah is about
- Noah’s call to his people and what he told them
- Noah’s methods: hope, warning, reminders of creation, of Allah’s blessings and of the resurrection
- His people’s stubborn rejection, their idolatry and their punishment in this world and the next
- Noah’s supplication that his people be wiped out
- Noah’s prayer for forgiveness for himself, his parents and the believers, and for ruin upon the disbelievers
Main purpose: To show those who call to Allah the method of calling, through the story of Noah.
