Tafsir of verse 59
Al-Mukhtasar
After these chosen prophets came followers of evil and deviation, who neglected prayer by not offering it in the required manner, and who perpetrated sins driven by their own desires such as fornication. These people will come face to face with evil and disappointment in Hell.
But they were succeeded by generations who neglected prayer and pursued their desires; so they will meet their doom16,
Notes
[16] i.e., a valley in Hell or the consequence of their evil deeds.
Then, there has succeeded them a posterity who have given up As-Salât (the prayers) [i.e. made their Salât (prayers) to be lost, either by not offering them or by not offering them perfectly or by not offering them in their proper fixed times] and have followed lusts.10 So they will be thrown in Hell.
Notes
[10] (V.19:59) Like drinking alcoholic drinks; giving false witnesses; eating unlawful things - meat of edible animals not slaughtered according to Allâh’s Order; taking intoxicants; narcotic drugs like opium, morphine, heroin, cannabis; committing crimes; evil wicked deeds like illegal sexual acts, murdering, taking others’ rights unlawfully, robbing, stealing, betraying, backbiting, slandering, telling lies.
Now there hath succeeded them a later generation whom have ruined worship and have followed lusts. But they will meet deception.
But after them there followed a posterity who missed prayers and followed after lusts soon, then, will they face Destruction,-
But there came after them an evil generation, who neglected prayers and followed and sensual desires, so they win meet perdition,
Then there succeeded even after them a succession who wasted the prayer and closely followed lusts; so they will eventually meet misguidance.
And there followed them successors who inherited the Scripture [while] taking the commodities of this lower life and saying, "It will be forgiven for us." And if an offer like it comes to them, they will [again] take it. Was not the covenant of the Scripture [i.e., the Torah] taken from them that they would not say about Allāh except the truth, and they studied what was in it? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allāh, so will you not use reason?
