Virtues and benefits of Surah Fatir

Surah 35 45 verses Meccan

Surah Fatir is one of the Mathani given to the Prophet ﷺ in place of the Gospel, and one of its verses is part of the supplication on waking: “Praise be to Allah who holds the heavens and the earth lest they cease”. It is the last surah to open with “Praise be to Allah”, and it shows that all creatures are in absolute need of their Creator, who is free of need of them.

When a man goes to his bed, an angel and a devil hasten to him. The angel says: “End with good,” and the devil says: “End with evil.” If he remembers Allah and then sleeps, the angel spends the night guarding him. When he wakes up, the angel says: “Begin with good,” and the devil says: “Begin with evil.” If he says: “Praise be to Allah who returned my soul to me and did not cause it to die in its sleep; praise be to Allah who ‘holds the heavens and the earth lest they cease’, to the end of the verse; praise be to Allah who ‘holds the sky from falling upon the earth except by His permission’”… and then falls from his bed and dies, he enters Paradise.

  • Warning against being deceived by this world and by Satan
  • No one bears another’s burden, and it is the learned who fear Allah
  • The merit of those who recite the Book, pray and spend secretly and openly
  • The heirs of the Book: the one who wrongs himself, the moderate and the foremost in good deeds
