Tafsir of verse 55
Al-Mukhtasar
On the day judgement shall occur, the criminals will swear that had not been in their graves except a very short period of time. Likewise they were deluded in the world by denying the truth.
On the Day when the Hour begins, the wicked will swear that they had not stayed [in this world] more than an hour. This is how they were deluded [from the truth]22.
Notes
[22] They used to make similar wrong estimates in the world that there was going to be no resurrection and accountability.
And on the Day that the Hour will be established, the Mujrimûn (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners) will swear that they stayed not but an hour - thus were they ever deluded [away from the truth (i.e. they used to tell lies and take false oaths, and turn away from the truth) in this life of the world)]
And on the day when the Hour riseth the guilty will vow that they did tarry but an hour - thus were they ever deceived.
On the Day that the Hour (of Reckoning) will be established, the transgressors will swear that they tarried not but an hour: thus were they used to being deluded!
And at the time when the hour shall come, the guilty shall swear (that) they did not tarry but an hour; thus are they ever turned away.
And on the Day when the Hour comes upright, the criminals will swear (that) in no way did they linger except (Literally: other than) for an hour; thus they were diverged (from truth) into falsehood.
So [even] if they are patient, the Fire is a residence for them; and if they ask to appease [Allāh], they will not be of those who are allowed to appease.
And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allāh, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers.
