Virtues and benefits of Surah Al-Mujadila
No hadith attributes a specific virtue to Surah Al-Mujadila: its merit is that it belongs to the Mufassal, by which the Prophet ﷺ was favoured over the other prophets. It is also unique in that the Greatest Name recurs throughout it, so that no verse is without it, and it tells how Allah answered the complaint of a woman and settled her case.
Its virtues at a glance
-
A surah of the Mufassal
It belongs to the Mufassal, given to the Prophet ﷺ as an extra grace by which he was favoured over the other prophets, according to the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa’: “I was given in place of the Torah the seven long ones… and I was favoured with the Mufassal.”
-
No verse without the Greatest Name
The surah is distinguished by repeating the all-encompassing Greatest Name, in the story of the pleading woman and throughout the surah, as no other surah does: none of its verses is without it, and many contain it twice or more.
-
Allah answers a woman’s complaint
The surah shows Allah’s grace towards His servants: He answered the supplication of a woman who complained to Him and settled her case before she rose from her place, while she was pleading with the Prophet ﷺ about her husband.
What the surah is about
- The woman who pleaded with the Prophet ﷺ about her husband, the ruling on zihar and its expiation
- The evil end of those who oppose Allah and His Messenger
- The vastness of Allah’s knowledge, from which no secret conversation is hidden
- The etiquette of private conversation and giving charity before consulting the Messenger ﷺ
- The etiquette of gatherings and making room in them
- Traits of the hypocrites: alliance with the Jews and false oaths
- Praise of the believers who do not love those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, and their good end
Main purpose: To show Allah’s all-embracing knowledge and complete encompassing, so as to cultivate awareness of Him and warn against disobeying Him.
About Surah Al-Mujadila
Al-Mujadila (“the Pleading Woman”) is an entirely Medinan surah, the 58th in the order of the Qur’an, revealed after Al-Munafiqun and before At-Tahrim. It opens with the woman who pleaded with the Prophet ﷺ about her husband: the case of the zihar pronounced by Aws ibn as-Samit against his wife Khawlah. Allah sets out the ruling on zihar and its expiation, and abolishes the pre-Islamic custom that made the wife forbidden in this way.
