Virtues and benefits of Surah Al-Isra

Surah 17 111 verses Meccan

The Prophet ﷺ recited Surah Al-Isra (Bani Isra’il) every night together with Az-Zumar; in one version, he would not sleep until he had recited them, so it is read every night. Ibn Mas’ud counted it, with Al-Kahf, Maryam, Taha and Al-Anbya, among “the first and finest” revealed in Mecca, and it is one of the Mi’in given to the Prophet ﷺ in place of the Psalms.

What the surah is about

  • The oneness of Allah: none is worthy of worship but Him
  • Allah’s transcendence, His glorification and praise, and gratitude for His blessings
  • The inimitability of the Qur’an and the wisdom of its gradual revelation
  • Individual responsibility: no one bears another’s burden, and no punishment before a messenger is sent
  • Noble character: kindness to parents, ties of kinship, forbidding waste, fornication and consuming the orphan’s wealth
  • Refuting idolatrous beliefs that ascribe daughters and partners to Allah
  • Proof of the resurrection and the gathering
  • Strengthening the Prophet ﷺ against the stubbornness and demands of the idolaters

Main purpose: Allah’s strengthening of His Messenger ﷺ, supporting him with clear signs and giving him glad tidings of victory and steadfastness.
