Tafsir of verse 37
Al-Mukhtasar
Do not walk on earth with pride and arrogance. If you walk haughtily on earth you will not be able to split the earth, nor will your stature reach the mountains in height and elevation. Why then are you so proud?!
Do not walk on the earth arrogantly; you cannot cleave the earth, nor can you reach the mountains in height35.
Notes
[35] Man is indeed a weak and small creature, then why arrogance?!
And walk not on the earth with conceit and arrogance. Verily, you can neither rend nor penetrate the earth, nor can you attain a stature like the mountains in height.
And walk not in the earth exultant. Lo! thou canst not rend the earth, nor canst thou stretch to the height of the hills.
Nor walk on the earth with insolence: for thou canst not rend the earth asunder, nor reach the mountains in height.
And do not go about in the land exultingly, for you cannot cut through the earth nor reach the mountains in height.
And do not walk in the earth merrily; surely you will never pierce the earth, and you will never reach the mountains in height.
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allāh; indeed, Allāh is Accepting of Repentance and Merciful.

And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allāh does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.
