Tafsir of verse 26
Al-Mukhtasar
O believer - give the relative his rights by keeping family ties, give to the poor and needy, and give the traveller who is stranded. Do not spend your wealth in sin or in a manner that is wasteful.
Give relatives their due, and the needy and the stranded travelers, and do not spend wastefully.
And give to the kinsman his due and to the Miskîn 4 (poor) and to the wayfarer. But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift.5 (Tafsir At-Tabarî)
Notes
[4] (V.17:26) See the footnote of (V.2:83).
[5] (V.17:26) You have to follow a middle course in your spendings - neither a miser nor a spendthrift, and not to be like those who spend in the disobedience of Allâh and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم.
Give the kinsman his due, and the needy, and the wayfarer, and squander not (thy wealth) in wantonness.
And render to the kindred their due rights, as (also) to those in want, and to the wayfarer: But squander not (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift.
And give to the near of kin his due and (to) the needy and the wayfarer, and do not squander wastefully.
And bring to a near kinsman his true (right) and (to) the indigent and the wayfarer; and do not squander wantonly (Literally: in "wanton" squandering).
So give the relative his right, as well as the needy and the traveler. That is best for those who desire the face [i.e., approval] of Allāh, and it is they who will be the successful.
