Tafsir of verse 72

Al-Mukhtasar

Indeed, I presented to the heavens, the earth and to the mountains the obligation to adhere to religion and guarding of wealth and secrets. They all refuse to bear the obligation, fearing the outcome of doing so, but the human accepted to carry it. Indeed, the human is oppressive to himself and ignorant of the outcome of carrying such a burden.

Indeed, We offered the Trust55 to the heavens, the earth, and the mountains, yet they refused56 to bear it and were afraid of it. But man assumed it; he is indeed wrongful and ignorant57.

Notes

[55] i.e., legal assignments and pledge of obedience to Allah.
[56] i.e., they did not accept the offer for fear of not being able to bear it in a due manner.
[57] Coveting the reward of this commitment while forgetting the consequence of the failure to fulfilling his pledge.

Truly, We did offer Al-Amânah (the trust or moral responsibility or honesty and all the duties which Allâh has ordained) to the heavens and the earth, and the mountains, but they declined to bear it and were afraid of it (i.e. afraid of Allâh’s Torment). But man bore it. Verily, he was unjust (to himself) and ignorant (of its results).

Lo! We offered the trust unto the heavens and the earth and the hills, but they shrank from bearing it and were afraid of it. And man assumed it. Lo! he hath proved a tyrant and a fool.

We did indeed offer the Trust to the Heavens and the Earth and the Mountains; but they refused to undertake it, being afraid thereof: but man undertook it;- He was indeed unjust and foolish;-

Surely We offered the trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to be unfaithful to it and feared from it, and man has turned unfaithful to it; surely he is unjust, ignorant;

Surely We presented (Literally: set before) the Trust (i.e., Trust of devotion) to the heavens and the earth and mountains. Yet they refused to carry it and felt timorous about it, and man carried it. Surely he has been constantly unjust, constantly ignorant.

Authentic Muttafaq ‘alayh (Bukhari and Muslim) Sahih Muslim 143a

A man will go to sleep and honesty will be taken out of his heart and only a trace of it will remain, like the trace of a dark spot. And a man will go to sleep again and the honesty will decrease further still, so its trace will resemble that of a blister.

Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) told us two Hadīths. I have seen one fulfilled, and I am waiting for the other. He told us: "A man will go to sleep and honesty will be taken out of his heart and…
