Say, "Have you considered: if it [i.e., the Qur’ān] was from Allāh, and you disbelieved in it while a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something similar1480 and believed while you were arrogant...?"1481 Indeed, Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.

Notes

[1480] Based upon information from the Torah.
[1481] The conclusion is estimated to be "...would you not then be the most unjust of people?" or "...in what condition would you then be?"

Tafsir of verse 10

Al-Mukhtasar

O Messenger, say to these deniers: “Tell me if this Qur’ān is from Allah and you deny it, and a witness from the Israelites testifies that it is from Allah, relying on what has come regarding it in the Torah and then he brings faith in it, whilst you scorn bringing faith in it, will you not then be oppressors? Allah does not enable the oppressors to the truth”.

Tafsir of the whole Surah Al-Ahqaf

Other translations of verse 10

Say, “What do you think, if this [Qur’an] is really from Allah and yet you reject it, and a witness4 from the Children of Israel has testified in its favor and believed5, whereas you persist in arrogance6? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.”

Notes

[4] Such as Abdullah ibn Salām, a Jewish scholar, who accepted Islam when the Prophet (ﷺ) emigrated from Makkah to Medina.
[5] Based on information in the Torah testifying his message.
[6] The estimated conclusion could be "...would you not then be unjust and wrongdoer people?"

Say: "Tell me! If this (Qur’ân) is from Allâh and you deny it, and a witness from among the Children of Israel (‘Abdullâh bin Salâm رضي الله عنه) testifies that [this Qur’ân is from Allâh (like the Taurât (Torah)], and he believed (embraced Islâm)2 while you are too proud (to believe)." Verily, Allâh guides not the people who are Zâlimûn (polytheists, disbelievers and wrong-doers).

Notes

[2] (V.46:10) See the footnote of (V.5:66).

Bethink you: If it is from Allah and ye disbelieve therein, and a witness of the Children of Israel hath already testified to the like thereof and hath believed, and ye are too proud (what plight is yours)? Lo! Allah guideth not wrong-doing folk.

Say: "See ye? If (this teaching) be from Allah, and ye reject it, and a witness from among the Children of Israel testifies to its similarity (with earlier scripture), and has believed while ye are arrogant, (how unjust ye are!) truly, Allah guides not a people unjust."

Say: Have you considered if it is from Allah, and you disbelieve in it, and a witness from among the children of Israel has borne witness of one like it, so he believed, while you are big with pride; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.

Say, "Have you seen that in case it is from the Providence of Allah and you have disbelieved in it, and a witness from among the Seeds (Or: sons) of Israel) testifies to its like and has believed, and you wax proud-surely Allah does not guide the unjust people."

I have never heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying about anybody walking on the earth that he is from the people of Paradise except `Abdullah bin Salam. The following Verse was revealed concerning him: "And a witness from the children of Israel testifies that this Qur'an is true" (46.10)

  • Al-Isra 17:107–108

Say, "Believe in it or do not believe." Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it - when it is recited to them, they fall upon their faces in prostration, …

  • Al-An’am 6:53

And thus We have tried some of them through others that they [i.e., the disbelievers] might say, "Is it these whom Allāh has favored among us?" Is not Allāh most knowing of those who are grateful?

  • Al-Ma’idah 5:51

O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allāh guides not the wrongdoing people.

  • Al-Qasas 28:50

And of the camels, two and of the cattle, two. Say, "Is it the two males He has forbidden or the two females or that which the wombs of the two females contain? Or were you witnesses when Allāh charged you with this? Then who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allāh to mislead the people by [something] other than knowledge? Indeed, Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people."

  • Al-Waqi’ah 56:88

It is all the same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; never will Allāh forgive them. Indeed, Allāh does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.
