Zafir is the active participle of ẓafira, “to win, to prevail over”: “the victorious one, who succeeds and reaches his goal” (root ẓ-f-r, that of ẓafar, “victory”). The name is common in Tunisia, where it is written Dhafer, in the Middle East and the Gulf. The Turkish name Zafer is the word ẓafar itself, “victory”: a closely related name from the same root.
