Boy Arabic origin Yā Sīn
Surah nameThe letters yā and sīn that open Surah 36; “O human being” according to Ibn ʿAbbas
Ya-Sin is the first verse of Surah 36, which many Muslims recite for their departed. Some scholars counted Yasin among the names of the Prophet ﷺ, to whom the surah speaks (“You are indeed one of the messengers”, 36:3); Egypt’s Dar al-Iftaʾ considers the name permissible and commendable (fatwa 16579).
Yasin is the pronunciation of the two letters yā and sīn that open the thirty-sixth surah and give it its name. Ibn ʿAbbas explained them as “O human being” (yā insān), in an Arabic dialect that shortens the call this way; others saw in them a name of the Prophet ﷺ, and many leave their meaning to Allah. The name has been given since the time of the Companions.
Yasin is the reading of the letters that open a surah of the Quran.

The schools differ: Imam Malik disapproved of taking as a name the letters that open surahs such as Ya-Sin and Ta-Ha (reported by al-Suhayli and Ibn al-Qayyim); the Shafiʿi and Hanbali schools say it is not disliked, and Egypt’s Dar al-Iftaʾ considers it permissible.
