Girl or boy Arabic origin Wisām
“Decoration, medal”; originally “distinctive mark”
The noun wisam is not in the Quran, but its root is used there for the believers’ insight: “In that are signs for those who discern (lil-mutawassimin)” (15:75), and the pious are known by “their mark (simahum) on their faces” (48:29).
Wisam comes from the root w-s-m of mark and sign (sima, “distinctive feature”; wasm, “brand”): originally a distinguishing mark, then, in modern Arabic, an honorary decoration, a medal. The name is given to boys and girls, especially in the Maghreb (Ouissam) and the Middle East.
The name Wissam does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (و س م) occurs 2 times. Examples:
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَٰتٍ لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ ٧٥
Indeed in that are signs for those who discern.
All the words of the root و س م in the Quran (2 occurrences)
