The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, At-Tawbah 9:30.
Uzair in Islam
ʿUzayr is named only once in the Quran, in a verse that refutes the claim “ʿUzayr is the son of Allah” (9:30). Many commentators identify him with the man whom Allah caused to die for a hundred years and then raised (2:259). His prophethood is not established: the Prophet ﷺ said, “I do not know whether ʿUzayr was a prophet or not” (Abu Dawud 4674).
Meaning of the name Uzair
ʿUzayr is the name the Quran gives to a figure of the Children of Israel, usually identified with Ezra, whose Hebrew name means “help”. Arab lexicographers (Mukhtar al-Sihah) note that its Arabic form is that of a diminutive, of ʿazr; in Arabic the root ʿ-z-r expresses support and honour (ʿazzara, 7:157). The name is mostly given in South Asia (Uzair) and Azerbaijan (Üzeyir).
The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allāh"; and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allāh." That is their statement from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before [them]. May Allāh destroy them; how are they deluded?
