Ubadah in Islam

ʿUbada ibn al-Samit, an Ansari of Medina, was one of the leaders (nuqabaʾ) appointed on the night of al-ʿAqaba and fought at Badr; he reported the pledge that the Prophet ﷺ took from his companions: “Pledge to me that you will not associate anything with Allah, that you will not steal, that you will not commit adultery…” (al-Bukhari 18). He also reported: “There is no prayer for one who does not recite al-Fatiha” (al-Bukhari 756).

Meaning of the name Ubadah

ʿUbada is an ancient Arabic name built on the root ʿ-b-d of service and worship: ʿabd is “the servant”, ʿibada “worship, obedience”. The dictionaries list it among the proper names of this root, with ʿUbayd, ʿAbbad and Maʿbad, without giving it a meaning of its own; it is understood as a name of devotion. It should not be confused with ʿUbayda (عبيدة), another name of the same family. It is given mainly in memory of ʿUbada ibn al-Samit.
