شَوَّال
Girl Arabic origin Shawwāl
Name of the tenth month of the Hijri calendar, which follows Ramadan
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted the whole year” (Muslim 1164). ʿAʾisha said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married me in Shawwal and consummated the marriage in Shawwal”, answering a superstition that saw in this month a bad omen for weddings (Muslim 1423).
Shawwal is the tenth month of the Islamic calendar, the one that follows Ramadan and begins with the festival of breaking the fast (ʿId al-Fitr). Lexicographers connect its name with the root sh-w-l, “to raise”: she-camels raised their tails then, in the season when they gave no more milk. In Turkey, Şevval has become a well-liked girls’ name.
No: neither the name Shawwal nor its root appears in the Quran. A name can be beautiful and permissible without coming from the Quran.
