The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, An-Nur 24:43.
Sana in Islam
The word sana (brilliance) occurs once in the Quran, about lightning: “The flash (sana) of its lightning almost takes away the sight” (24:43).
Meaning of the name Sana
Sanaʾ brings together two neighbouring words: sana, with a short final a, “brilliance, vivid light” (of lightning or fire), and sanaʾ, “elevation, nobility, high rank”. The name is written Sanaa, Sana or Sanae in the Maghreb. Turkish Sena comes from another word, thanaʾ, “praise”.
Do you not see that Allāh drives clouds? Then He brings them together; then He makes them into a mass, and you see the rain emerge from within it. And He sends down from the sky, mountains [of clouds] within which is hail, and He strikes with it whom He wills and averts it from whom He wills. The flash of its lightning almost takes away the eyesight.
