The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Ar-Rum 30:21.
Mawaddah in Islam
The Quran says: “Among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves that you may find tranquillity in them, and He placed between you affection (mawadda) and mercy” (30:21). The word occurs eight times, including “affection for kinship” (42:23).
Meaning of the name Mawaddah
Mawadda comes from the root w-d-d of love (wudd, “affection”; al-Wadud, “the Most Loving”, a name of Allah): tender love that shows itself and unites hearts. The word is inseparable from the verse on marriage, where it is paired with mercy. A feminine name given in the Middle East and the Maghreb.
And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.
It is that of which Allāh gives good tidings to His servants who believe and do righteous deeds. Say, [O Muḥammad], "I do not ask you for it [i.e., this message] any payment [but] only good will through [i.e., due to] kinship." And whoever commits a good deed - We will increase for him good therein. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Appreciative.
Perhaps Allāh will put, between you and those to whom you have been enemies among them, affection. And Allāh is competent, and Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
But if bounty comes to you from Allāh, he will surely say, as if [i.e., showing that] there had never been between you and him any affection, "Oh, I wish I had been with them so I could have attained a great attainment."
