Girl Greek origin Māriya
Family of the Prophet ﷺArabic form of Maria, name of the mother of Ibrahim, the Prophet’s son ﷺ
Mariya in Islam
Mariya al-Qibtiyya, a Coptic Christian from Egypt, was sent to the Prophet ﷺ by the governor al-Muqawqis; in the year 8 of the Hijra she bore him his son Ibrahim, who died in infancy. An eclipse occurred on the day Ibrahim died, and the Prophet ﷺ taught that eclipses do not happen for anyone’s death or life.
Meaning of the name Mariya
Mariya is the form the Arabs gave to the Greek and Coptic name Maria, itself from the Hebrew Miryam (like Maryam). Arab lexicographers sometimes linked it to mariya, “the white, the bright one”, but a foreign origin is the most likely. The name is tied to Mariya al-Qibtiyya, mother of Ibrahim, the Prophet’s son ﷺ.
