جُود
Girl or boy Arabic origin Jūd
Virtue“Generosity”, giving freely and without counting
The word jud is not in the Quran, but generosity is one of the best-known qualities of the Prophet ﷺ: Ibn ʿAbbas reports that he “was the most generous (ajwad) of people, and even more generous in Ramadan when Jibril met him”; he was then “more generous in doing good than the blowing wind” (al-Bukhari 6).
Jud is generosity, giving freely and without counting (jada bi-malihi, “he was generous with his wealth”), from the root j-w-d of excellence (jayyid, “good, excellent”) and of abundant rain (jawd). One who has this quality is called jawad. The name is given to girls and boys alike in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria.
The name Jood does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (ج و د) occurs 2 times. Examples:
