“Inspiration”, what Allah places in the heart
The noun ilham is not in the Quran, but its verb occurs once, in the oath of Surah al-Shams: “By the soul and He who proportioned it, and inspired it (fa-alhamaha) with its wickedness and its righteousness” (91:7-8).
Ilham is the verbal noun of alhama, “to inspire, to put into the mind” (root l-h-m, that of swallowing in one gulp): inspiration, the idea or feeling Allah places in the heart. The name is very common in the Maghreb and the Middle East; Elham is its Persian form.
The name Ilham does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (ل ه م) occurs once. Examples:
فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَا ٨
And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,
