ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ ٦
Guide us to the straight path -
هِدَايَة
Girl or boy Arabic origin Hidāya
Virtue“Guidance”, being set on the straight path
The noun hidaya is not in the Quran, but its root occurs there more than three hundred times: every prayer contains the request “Guide us (ihdina) to the straight path” (1:6), and the Quran says: “Whomever Allah wills to guide, He opens his breast to Islam” (6:125).
Hidaya is the verbal noun of hada, “to guide”, from the root h-d-y (that of huda and of the divine name al-Hadi): direction towards the good, and in religion Allah’s opening of the heart to faith. A feminine name in the Maghreb and Indonesia (Hidayah); in Turkey, Hidayet is mostly masculine.
The name Hidaya does not appear as such in the Quran, but its root (ه د ي) occurs 316 times. Examples:

ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْكِتَٰبُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ ٢
This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allāh -
So whoever Allāh wants to guide - He expands his breast to [contain] Islām; and whoever He wants to send astray - He makes his breast tight and constricted as though he were climbing into the sky. Thus does Allāh place defilement upon those who do not believe.
