Ikrimah in Islam
ʿIkrima ibn Abi Jahl long fought against Islam, like his father. At the conquest of Mecca he fled; his wife Umm Hakim obtained a safe-conduct for him from the Prophet ﷺ, and he came back and embraced Islam. He died a martyr in the conquests of Syria. Another ʿIkrima, a disciple of Ibn ʿAbbas, was one of the great Quran commentators of the following generation.
Meaning of the name Ikrimah
According to the lexicographers, ʿikrima means the female pigeon, or the female turtle-dove (saq hurr); it is an ancient Arabic name built on the four-letter root ʿ-k-r-m. It is sometimes explained as “generous” by linking it with karam (“generosity”): this is a folk etymology, since the word does not come from the root k-r-m. The name is given in memory of the Companion ʿIkrima ibn Abi Jahl and of the great Quran commentator ʿIkrima.
