The noun ikhlas is not in the text of the Quran, but its root recurs often: “They were commanded only to worship Allah, sincere to Him in religion (mukhlisina lahu al-din)” (98:5). Surah 112, al-Ikhlas, bears its name: “Say: He is Allah, the One” (112:1).
Ikhlas is the verbal noun of akhlasa, “to make pure, unmixed” (root kh-l-s of what is pure and free, khalis). In religion it means devoting one’s deeds to Allah alone, without seeking people’s regard. It is also the name of Surah 112, which proclaims the oneness of Allah. A feminine name in the Maghreb, used for both sexes in Turkey (İhlas).
And they were not commanded except to worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakāh. And that is the correct religion.
