Asad ibn Hashim, brother of ʿAbd al-Muttalib, was the Prophet’s great-uncle ﷺ and the father of Fatima bint Asad, ʿAli’s mother. At Khaybar ʿAli announced himself saying: “I am the one whose mother named him Haydara”, that is, the lion (Muslim 1807). Hamza, the Prophet’s uncle ﷺ, was called “the lion of Allah”. Khadija and al-Zubayr belonged to the Qurayshi clan of Banu Asad.
Meaning of the name Asad
Asad is the most common word for the lion in Arabic (root ʾ-s-d); from it comes istaʾsada, “to become as bold as a lion”. The Arabs liked to give their sons lion names, a symbol of bravery: Hamza, Usama, ʿAbbas and Haydar are others. The word asad does not occur in the Quran, which refers to the lion as qaswara according to many commentators (74:51). The name should not be confused with Asʿad (أسعد), “the happiest”, that of the Companion Asʿad ibn Zurara.
