فُرْقَان
Boy Arabic origin Furqān
In the QuranSurah name“The criterion”, what separates truth from falsehood
The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Al-Furqan 25:1.
Surah 25, al-Furqan, opens thus: “Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His servant, that he may be a warner to the worlds” (25:1). The word occurs seven times; the Quran also promises it to the God-fearing: “If you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion” (8:29).
Furqan comes from the root f-r-q of separation (faraqa, “to separate, to distinguish”): it is what makes the difference between truth and falsehood, lawful and unlawful. The Quran gives this name to the revelation itself, and also to the day of Badr, “the day of the criterion”. Furkan is a very popular name in Turkey.
Yes: the word Furqan appears in the Quran 7 times, in 5 surahs.

The month of Ramaḍān [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’ān, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the crescent of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allāh intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allāh for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.
O you who have believed, if you fear Allāh, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allāh is the possessor of great bounty.
