Zabya is the feminine of zaby, “gazelle”, from the root z-b-y. In Arabic poetry the gazelle is the image of grace, slenderness and beautiful eyes. The name is mostly given in the Gulf; the name of the city of Abu Dhabi, Abu Zaby, is explained by local tradition as “the place of gazelles”.
