The word as it is recited in the Quran: Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, Ali ’Imran 3:123.
Badr in Islam
The Quran names Badr once: “Allah gave you victory at Badr when you were weak” (3:123). The Prophet ﷺ said of the fighters of Badr: “Perhaps Allah looked at the people of Badr and said: Do what you will, I have forgiven you” (al-Bukhari 3983).
Meaning of the name Badr
Badr means the full moon, when it “anticipates” (badara) the sun by rising as it sets (root b-d-r). The word is also the name of a well and a place between Mecca and Medina where, in the year 2 of the Hijra, the Battle of Badr took place. The name is given alone or in compounds: Badr al-Din, “full moon of the religion”.
And already had Allāh given you victory at [the battle of] Badr while you were weak [i.e., few in number]. Then fear Allāh; perhaps you will be grateful.
