Biography of Mahmoud Abdulhakam

Mahmoud Abdulhakam: the life of a great Quran reciter

Allah blessed him with a distinctive voice and a unique tone that endeared him to young and old alike. He studied the Holy Quran at length until he mastered it, and deepened his understanding of the religion until he excelled in it. He traveled far and wide spreading the Book of Allah, sparing no effort to make it known. His powerful voice made reverence stronger than any echo, and his masterful recitation carried contemplation to its farthest reaches. This is the Egyptian reciter Sheikh Mahmoud Abdulhakam, who passed away in September 1982.

Sheikh Mahmoud Abdulhakam was born in the village of Karnak, in Qena Governorate in Upper Egypt, on 17 Rabi’ al-Awwal 1333 AH (February 1, 1915). He grew up in a conservative family; his father was one of the best-known scholars in the village. As soon as he was old enough, his father enrolled him in the village kuttab (Quran school), and he completed the memorization of the Holy Quran and its rules before the age of ten. This paved the way for him to join the Ahmadi Institute in Tanta, where he spent two full years before moving on to study at Al-Azhar in Cairo, learning from the finest scholars and most eminent sheikhs.

Throughout his studies, he, may Allah have mercy on him, stood out for his intelligence, sharpness, and brilliance. He was held up as an example among his peers and was a role model for those of his age who shared his ambitions. As a result, invitations to recite the Holy Quran poured in from everywhere, and his fame spread across the regions and governorates. In 1937, he sat the Egyptian Radio entrance examination and passed, becoming one of the finest reciters of his time, with a reputation that spread throughout Egypt and the Arab world. Alongside his work as a radio reciter, he, may Allah have mercy on him, was appointed reciter at the Sayyida Nafisa Mosque.

At the height of his outstanding contribution, after a successful academic and professional career, the inevitable hour came upon him in 1982, and he departed this world, leaving behind a remarkable Quranic legacy and a rich library of Quran recordings whose echo still resonates today. With his death, may Allah have mercy on him, Egypt and the Muslim world lost a great reciter, one of those rare voices likened to the “flutes of David” that are hard to find again.
