What about Umrah?

Umrah has no official price, except in Turkey, where the Diyanet runs its own trips. Its cost depends mainly on the season, the distance between the hotel and the Haram, and the number of people per room: a ten-day Umrah in low season, in a shared room at a hotel with shuttle buses, is two to three times cheaper than the same Umrah during Ramadan right next to the Haram.

Tips to pay less

  • Travel off-season

Avoid Ramadan and school holidays: hotels near the Haram often cost two to three times more at those times. October, November and January are among the quietest months.

  • Book early

Four to six months ahead for Ramadan, two to three months for quieter periods: the best rooms go first.

  • Share a room

Package prices are per person: in a room for four, accommodation costs almost half as much as in a double room.

  • Choose a hotel with shuttle buses

Hotels two kilometres or more away, served by shuttle buses, are three to six times cheaper than those overlooking the Haram. If you can, keep a hotel close by for the last few days.

  • Take the Haramain train

The high-speed train links Jeddah airport, Makkah and Madinah, for anything from a few dozen to just over two hundred riyals in economy class.

  • Compare what the package includes

Visa, insurance, transfers, meals, visits, train, sacrifice: two packages at the same price don’t always include the same services. Ask for the list in writing.

  • Do Umrah independently

You can apply for the Umrah visa yourself on Nusuk, provided you book approved accommodation and transport at the same time: for a simple trip, this is often cheaper.

  • Go through the official route

For Hajj, the government scheme is almost always the cheapest option in your country. Register for the draw every year if that is how it works where you live.

  • Save every month

Set your target date and put the same amount aside each month; the calculator’s savings plan works out that amount for you.

  • Avoid deals that are too good to be true

Performing Hajj without an official permit (on a visit or tourist visa) is forbidden: fines, deportation and an entry ban. Only accept a package that includes a permit, and pay by a traceable method.
