Narrator:Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar

حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ قُلْتُ لِبِلاَلٍ كَيْفَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم

يَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِمْ حِينَ كَانُوا يُسَلِّمُونَ عَلَيْهِ وَهُوَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ قَالَ كَانَ يُشِيرُ بِيَدِهِ ‏

Ibn Umar narrated:

"I said to Bilal: 'How did the Prophet (S) reply to them when they gave him Salams and he was performing Salat?' He said: 'He would motion with his hand.'"

قَوْلُهُ : ( قَالَ كَانَ يُشِيرُ بِيَدِهِ ) وَفِي حَدِيثِ صُهَيْبٍ الْمُتَقَدِّمِ بِأُصْبُعِهِ وَلَا اِخْتِلَافَ بَيْنَهُمَا فَيَجُوزُ أَنْ يَكُونَ أَشَارَ مَرَّةً بِأُصْبُعِهِ وَمَرَّةً بِيَدِهِ , وَيُحْتَمَلُ أَنْ يَكُونَ الْمُرَادُ بِالْيَدِ الْأُصْبُعَ حَمْلًا لِلْمُطْلَقِ عَلَى الْمُقَيَّدِ , قَالَهُ الشَّوْكَانِيُّ. قَوْلُهُ : ( هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ) وَأَخْرَجَهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ ( وَحَدِيثُ صُهَيْبٍ حَسَنٌ ) وَأَخْرَجَهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ وَالنَّسَائِيُّ…

Ibu ‘Umar said he asked Bilal how the Prophet responded to them when they greeted him while he was engaged in prayer, and he replied, “He used to make a sign with his hand.” Tirmidhi transmitted it. In Nasa'i’s version there is something similar, but Suhaib occurs instead of Bilal.

I passed by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) who was praying. I saluted him and he returned it by making a sign. The narrator said: I do not know but that he said: He made a sign with his finger. This is the version reported by Qutaybah.

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to the mosque at Quba’ and performed prayer there. Some men of the Ansar came and greeted him. I asked Suhaib, who was with him: ‘How did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) respond to them?’ He said: ‘He gestured with his hand.’”

Authentic Sunan an-Nasa'i 1187

"Ibn 'Umar said: The Prophet (ﷺ) entered the Masjid of Quba' to pray there, then some men came in and greeted him with Salam. I asked Suhaib, who was with him: 'What did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) do when he was greeted?' He said: 'He used to gesture with his hand.'"
