أَخْبَرَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْمِقْسَمِيُّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ ذَرٍّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم

سَجَدَ فِي ‏{‏ ص ‏}‏ وَقَالَ ‏"‏ سَجَدَهَا دَاوُدُ تَوْبَةً وَنَسْجُدُهَا شُكْرًا ‏"

It was narrated from Ibn Abbas that:

The Prophet (ﷺ) prostrated in Sad and said: "Dawud did this prostration in repentance and we do it in thanksgiving."

Reported by An-Nasa’i (No. 957) and Ahmad (No. 2390).

Al-Sindi — Hashiyat al-Sindi on Sunan al-Nasa'i

قَوْله ( تَوْبَة ) أَيْ لِأَجْلِ التَّوْبَة ( شُكْرًا ) أَيْ عَلَى قَبُول التَّوْبَة وَتَوْفِيق اللَّه تَعَالَى إِيَّاهُ عَلَيْهَا فَحِين يَجْرِي فِي الْقُرْآن ذِكْر مِنْ اللَّه تَعَالَى لِتِلْكَ التَّوْبَة نَشْكُرهُ تَعَالَى عَلَى تِلْكَ النِّعْمَة وَكَوْن السَّجْدَة لِلشُّكْرِ لَا يَسْتَلْزِم عَدَم الْوُجُوب كَمَا أَنَّهُ لَا يَسْتَلْزِم الْوُجُوب فَيَنْبَغِي الرُّجُوع فِي مَعْرِفَة أَحَد الْأَمْرَيْنِ إِلَى خَارِج وَاللَّهُ تَعَالَى أَعْلَم.…

Ibn ‘Abbas said that the Prophet prostrated himself when reciting Sad (Al-Qur’an; 38) and said, "David made this prostration in repentance, but we do it out of gratitude.” Nasa’i transmitted it.

A prostration while reciting Surat Sad (Surah 38) is not one of the 'Azaa'im (those which are always required), but I have seen Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) prostrating while reciting it. [Reported by al-Bukhari].
