Narrator:Ā’ishah

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ

أَوَّلَ مَا فُرِضَتِ الصَّلاَةُ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَأُقِرَّتْ صَلاَةُ السَّفَرِ وَأُتِمَّتْ صَلاَةُ الْحَضَرِ ‏.‏

It was narrated that 'Aishah said:

"The first time the Salah was enjoined it was two Rak'ahs, and it remained as such when traveling, but the Salah while resident was made complete."

Al-Sindi — Hashiyat al-Sindi on Sunan al-Nasa'i

قَوْله ( أَوَّل مَا فُرِضَتْ الصَّلَاة رَكْعَتَيْنِ ) هَكَذَا فِي بَعْض النُّسَخ وَفِي بَعْضهَا رَكْعَتَانِ بِالرَّفْعِ وَالظَّاهِر أَنَّ أَوَّل بِالنَّصْبِ ظَرْف وَمَا مَصْدَرِيَّة حِينِيَّة وَالتَّقْدِير عَلَى نُسْخَة نَصْب رَكْعَتَيْنِ كَانَتْ الصَّلَاة أَوَّل أَوْقَاتهَا اِفْتِرَاضهَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَعَلَى نُسْخَة الرَّفْع الصَّلَاة أَوَّل أَوْقَات اِفْتِرَاضهَا رَكْعَتَانِ ثُمَّ الْمُرَاد هِيَ الصَّلَاة الْمُخْتَلِفَة سَفَرًا وَحَضَرًا فَلَا يُشْكِل بِصَلَاةِ الْمَغْرِب وَالْفَجْر وَ قَوْله ( فَأُقِرَّتْ ) أَيْ رَجَعَتْ بَعْد نُزُول الْقَصْر فِي السَّفَر إِلَى الْحَالَة الْأُولَى بِحَيْثُ كَأَنَّهَا كَانَتْ مُقَرَّرَة عَلَى الْحَالَة الْأَصْلِيَّة وَمَا ظَهَرَتْ الزِّيَادَة فِيهَا أَصْلً…

"When the prayers were first enjoined they were of two rak`at each. Later the prayer in a journey was kept as it was but the prayers for non-travelers were completed." Az-Zuhri said, "I asked `Urwa what made Aisha pray the full prayers (in journey)." He replied, "She did the same as `Uthman did."

الصَّلاَةُ أَوَّلُ مَا فُرِضَتْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَأُقِرَّتْ صَلاَةُ السَّفَرِ، وَأُتِمَّتْ صَلاَةُ الْحَضَرِ‏.‏

Narrated 'Aishah (RA) that when the Salat (prayer) was first prescribed, it consisted of two Rak'at. Afterwards, the prayer during travelling was confirmed (as two Rak'at), while the prayer at the place of residence was completed (as four Rak'at). [Agreed upon].

When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) went out on a journey of three miles or three Farasikh, he (ﷺ) used to pray two Rak'at. [Reported by Muslim]. Farasikh (plural of Farsakh) is Persian unit of distance. Farsakh is equal to about three miles.

I prayed along with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) four rak'ahs at the noon prayer at Medina and two rak'ahs at the afternoon prayer in Dhu al-Hulaifah.

صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم الظُّهْرَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ أَرْبَعًا وَالْعَصْرَ بِذِي الْحُلَيْفَةِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ‏.‏

Allah, the Exalted, prescribed prayer for you, through the tongue of your Prophet (ﷺ), four rak'ahs while resident, two rak'ahs while travelling and one rak'ah in time of danger.
