Narrator:Umar ibn al-Khattāb

أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ، عَنْ حَنْظَلَةَ، قَالَ رَأَيْتُ طَاوُسًا يَمُرُّ بِالرُّكْنِ فَإِنْ وَجَدَ عَلَيْهِ زِحَامًا مَرَّ وَلَمْ يُزَاحِمْ وَإِنْ رَآهُ خَالِيًا قَبَّلَهُ ثَلاَثًا ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ فَعَلَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ فَعَلَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّكَ حَجَرٌ لاَ تَنْفَعُ وَلاَ تَضُرُّ وَلَوْلاَ أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم

قَبَّلَكَ مَا قَبَّلْتُكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ عُمَرُ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَعَلَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ‏.‏

It was narrated that Hanzalah said:

"I saw tawus pass by the Corner. If he saw it crowded, he would pass by and he would not push his way in. And if he way it was free, he would kiss it three times, then he said: 'I saw Ibn Abbas doing that. Ibn Abbas said: 'I saw Umar bin Al-Khattab doing that, then he said: You are just a stone that can neither cause harm or bring benefit; were it not that I saw the Messenger ofAllah kissing you I would not have kissed you.' Then Umar said:b 'I saw the Messenger of Allah doing that.'"

Al-Sindi — Hashiyat al-Sindi on Sunan al-Nasa'i

( إِنَّك حَجَر لَا تَضُرّ وَلَا تَنْفَع ) إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّه قَالَ الطَّبَرِيُّ : إِنَّمَا قَالَ عُمَر ذَلِكَ لِأَنَّ النَّاس كَانُوا حَدِيثِي عَهْد بِعِبَادَةِ الْأَصْنَام فَخَشِيَ عُمَر أَنْ يَظُنّ الْجُهَّال أَنَّ اِسْتِلَام الْحَجَر مِنْ بَاب تَعْظِيم الْأَحْجَار كَمَا كَانَتْ الْعَرَب تَفْعَل فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّة فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يُعْلِم النَّاس أَنَّ اِسْتِلَامه الْحَجَر اِتِّبَاع لِفِعْلِ رَسُول اللَّه صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا أَنَّ الْحَجَر يَنْفَع وَيَضُرّ بِذَاتِهِ كَمَا كَانَتْ الْجَاهِلِيَّة تَعْتَقِدهُ فِي الْأَوْثَان وَقَدْ رَوَى الْحَاكِم مِنْ حَدِيث أَبِي سَعِيد أَنَّ عُمَر رَضِيَ اللَّه عَنْهُ لَمَّا قَالَ هَذَا قَالَ لَهُ عَلِيّ بْن أَبِي طَالِب إِنَّهُ يَضُرّ و…

“I saw the bald forehead of ‘Umar bin Khattab when he kissed the Black Stone and said: ‘I am kissing you, although I know that you are only a stone and you can neither cause harm nor bring benefit. Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) kissing you, I would not have kissed you.’”

إِنِّي لأُقَبِّلُكَ وَإِنِّي لأَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ لاَ تَضُرُّ وَلاَ تَنْفَعُ وَلَوْلاَ أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ يُقَبِّلُكَ مَا قَبَّلْتُكَ ‏.‏
