حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، جَمِيعًا عَنِ ابْنِ مَهْدِيٍّ، - قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، - حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ خُمَيْرٍ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ، قَالَ خَرَجْتُ مَعَ شُرَحْبِيلَ بْنِ السِّمْطِ إِلَى قَرْيَةٍ عَلَى رَأْسِ سَبْعَةَ عَشَرَ أَوْ ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ مِيلاً

فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ ‏.‏ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ فَقَالَ رَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ صَلَّى بِذِي الْحُلَيْفَةِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا أَفْعَلُ كَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَفْعَلُ

Jubair b. Nufair reported:

I went along with Shurahbil b. al-Simt to a village which was situated at a distance of seventeen or eighteen miles, and he said only two rak'ahs of prayer. I said to him (about it) and he said: I saw 'Umar observing two rak'ahs at Dhu'l-Hulaifa and I (too) said to him (about it) and he said: I am doing the same as I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) doing.

قَوْله : ( وَحَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَة عَنْ يَزِيد بْن خُمَيْر عَنْ حَبِيب بْن عُبَيْد عَنْ جُبَيْر بْن نُفَيْر قَالَ : خَرَجْت مَعَ شُرَحْبِيل بْن السِّمْط إِلَى قَرْيَة عَلَى رَأْس سَبْعَة عَشَر أَوْ ثَمَانِيَة عَشَر مِيلًا فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقُلْت لَهُ فَقَالَ : رَأَيْت عُمَر رَضِيَ اللَّه عَنْهُ صَلَّى بِذِي الْحُلَيْفَة رَكْعَتَيْنِ , فَقُلْت لَهُ فَقَالَ : إِنَّمَا أَفْعَل كَمَا رَأَيْت رَسُول اللَّه صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَفْعَل ) هَذَا الْحَدِيث فِيهِ أَرْبَعَة تَابِعِيِّينَ يَرْوِي بَعْضهمْ عَنْ بَعْض يَزِيد بْن خُمَيْر فَمَنْ بَعْده , وَتَقَدَّمَتْ لِهَذَا نَظَائِر كَثِيرَة , وَسَيَأْتِي بَيَان بَاقِيهَا فِي مَوَاضِعهَا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّه تَعَالَى. وَ ( يَزِيد بْن خُمَيْر )…

"I saw 'Umar bin Al-Khattab praying two rak'ahs in Dhul-Hulaifah and I asked him about that. He said: 'I am simply doing that which I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) doing.'"

Narrated 'Aishah (RA) that when the Salat (prayer) was first prescribed, it consisted of two Rak'at. Afterwards, the prayer during travelling was confirmed (as two Rak'at), while the prayer at the place of residence was completed (as four Rak'at). [Agreed upon].

When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) went out on a journey of three miles or three Farasikh, he (ﷺ) used to pray two Rak'at. [Reported by Muslim]. Farasikh (plural of Farsakh) is Persian unit of distance. Farsakh is equal to about three miles.

I prayed along with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) four rak'ahs at the noon prayer at Medina and two rak'ahs at the afternoon prayer in Dhu al-Hulaifah.

صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم الظُّهْرَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ أَرْبَعًا وَالْعَصْرَ بِذِي الْحُلَيْفَةِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ ‏.‏

Allah, the Exalted, prescribed prayer for you, through the tongue of your Prophet (ﷺ), four rak'ahs while resident, two rak'ahs while travelling and one rak'ah in time of danger.

فَرَضَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى الصَّلاَةَ عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّكُمْ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي الْحَضَرِ أَرْبَعًا وَفِي السَّفَرِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَفِي الْخَوْفِ رَكْعَةً ‏.‏
