Narrator:Anas ibn Mālik

وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، كِلاَهُمَا عَنْ غُنْدَرٍ، - قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، غُنْدَرٌ - عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَزِيدَ الْهُنَائِيِّ، قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ عَنْ قَصْرِ الصَّلاَةِ، فَقَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم

إِذَا خَرَجَ مَسِيرَةَ ثَلاَثَةِ أَمْيَالٍ أَوْ ثَلاَثَةِ فَرَاسِخَ - شُعْبَةُ الشَّاكُّ - صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ ‏.‏

Yahya b. Yazid al-Huna'i reported:

I asked Anas b. Malik about shortening of prayer. He said: When the Messenger of' Allah (ﷺ) had covered a distance of three miles or three farsakh (Shu'ba, one of the narrators, had some doubt about it) he observed two rak'ahs.

Explanation in Arabic

روى يحيى الهنائي أنه سأل أنس بن مالك رضي الله عنه عن قصر الصلاة، فأخبره أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يقصر الصلاة ويصلي ركعتين إذا سار مسيرة ثلاثة أميال أو ثلاثة فراسخ، وهذا ليس على سبيل الاشتراط، وإنما وقع بحسب الحاجة؛ لأن الظاهر من أسفاره صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه ما كان يسافر سفرًا طويلًا، فيخرج عند حضور فريضة مقصورة، ويترك قصرها بقرب المدينة ويتمها، وإنما كان يسافر بعيدًا من وقت المقصورة، فتدركه على ثلاثة أميال أو أكثر، أو نحو ذلك، فيصليها حينئذ، والأحاديث المطلقة مع ظاهر القرآن متعاضدات على جواز القصر من حين يخرج من البلد، ويفارق البنيان، فإنه حينئذ يسمى مسافرًا.

قَوْله : ( يَحْيَى بْن يَزِيد الْهُنَائِيّ ) هُوَ بِضَمِّ الْهَاء وَبَعْدهَا نُون مُخَفَّفَة وَبِالْمَدِّ الْمَنْسُوب إِلَى هَنَاء بْن مَالِك بْن فَهْم , قَالَهُ السَّمْعَانِيّ. قَوْله : ( إِنَّ رَسُول اللَّه صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا خَرَجَ ثَلَاثَة أَمْيَال أَوْ ثَلَاثَة فَرَاسِخ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ ) هَذَا لَيْسَ عَلَى سَبِيل الِاشْتِرَاط , وَإِنَّمَا وَقَعَ بِحَسَبِ الْحَاجَة , لِأَنَّ الظَّاهِر مِنْ أَسْفَاره صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ مَا كَانَ يُسَافِر سَفَرًا طَوِيلًا , فَيَخْرُج عِنْد حُضُور فَرِيضَة مَقْصُورَة وَيَتْرُك قَصْرهَا بِقُرْبِ الْمَدِينَة وَيُتِمّهَا , وَإِنَّمَا كَانَ يُسَافِر بَعِيدًا مِنْ وَقْت الْمَقْصُورَة فَتُدْرِكهُ عَلَى ثَلَاثَة أَمْيَ…

I asked Anas b. Malik about the shortening of the prayer (while travelling). He said: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went out on a journey of three miles or three farsakh (the narrator Shu'bah doubted), he used to pray two rak'ahs.

When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) went out on a journey of three miles or three Farasikh, he (ﷺ) used to pray two Rak'at. [Reported by Muslim]. Farasikh (plural of Farsakh) is Persian unit of distance. Farsakh is equal to about three miles.

Narrated 'Aishah (RA) that when the Salat (prayer) was first prescribed, it consisted of two Rak'at. Afterwards, the prayer during travelling was confirmed (as two Rak'at), while the prayer at the place of residence was completed (as four Rak'at). [Agreed upon].

I prayed along with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) four rak'ahs at the noon prayer at Medina and two rak'ahs at the afternoon prayer in Dhu al-Hulaifah.
